At My Wedding Twitterring and Facebooking at the Altar

  • Posted on April 28, 2010 at 8:04 PM

This was just done to be funny – we really don’t Facebook THAT often :) .

A special thanks to Mountain Christian Church in Joppa, MD. If you are in the area and are looking for someplace with great community, children, and small group ministries check us out at http://mountainchiristian.org.

10% off orders over $50 at http://petsupplies.nextdaypets.com using coupon code FBWED. Come on people, help those puppies have a Merry Christmas!

I have a lot of family scattered around the country and we all use Facebook a lot to keep in touch. So when Tracy and I were engaged, most of my family found out via Facebook because we updated our statuses.

I surprised not only my guests, but also Tracy by pulling out my phone and posting on Facebook and Twitter from the altar during out wedding.

I had her phone ready in my pocket, so when she asked for it I could hand it to her. No one knew about this except the minister, and myself.

Wedding gifts?

  • Posted on April 12, 2010 at 9:03 AM

My fiance does not want to do any wedding registries. We have lived together for 3 years now, and already have towels, dishes, etc. What type of things to people get for weddings? My mom said to make a donation box at the reception, but I think that is disrespectful. I would prefer to just tell people that they only need to show up, no gifts are necessary, but People may try to get us stuff anyway. Any Ideas?

I was in the same situation. We’d been together for 6 years and already owned our home so I didn’t think there was anything that we could possibly want. But, his family was very confused when there was no registry. So we ended up registering at a couple of places. Not too much and we did it in the comfort of our own home online and I would call my (now) hubby in and ask his opinion on certain things for the home.

If you don’t register, you will be amazed at the amount of, well, crap that you receive. I know that’s harsh, but some people need direction.

Short of putting on the invitation that if anyone feels the need to give a gift to donate to their favorite charity, people will bring gifts. Many people will give you a card with cash or check, and usually someone in the wedding party will have a discreet satin satchel that they will keep track of the cards for the bridal party (although I have heard of the ‘boxes’ and I don’t think they are such a bad idea, as it would typically just be on the table that the gifts go on and wouldn’t get lost).

Also, there may be out of town relatives or long lost friends of yours who hear the news and would like to send a gift to congratulate you (without even coming to your wedding). In this day and age, everyone just clicks on their computer and looks up your registry.

I’m not saying you have to ask for handouts, but I cannot express enough how confused my husband’s family looked when we said we weren’t registering and didn’t need anything. No matter what you tell some people, they will not show up without a gift in hand (or having sent one in advance).

And, when you register with most places you get a coupon for at least 10% off of anything off of your registry (and usually the whole store) after your wedding. I did this with Williams Sonoma and ended up returning things we didn’t need and got a couple appliances we’d been eying and then had the rest in gift cards…which we used to buy many people’s Christmas gifts that year!

How do wedding and engagement rings work?

  • Posted on April 12, 2010 at 9:03 AM

This topic confuses me…
Is the engagment ring traditionally more expensive, or cheaper than the wedding ring?

Why are there 2 rings (engagement and wedding) wouldnt that be extremely expensive?

Does the guy get an engagement ring too, or is the just the girl?

Does the girl have to buy the guys wedding ring?

Does the couple shop for the wedding rings together?

Also, isn’t there an engagement/wedding ring that is like 2 pieces, and when the wedding comes you get the 2nd piece?

Q – Is the engagment ring traditionally more expensive, or cheaper than the wedding ring?
A – The engagement ring is more expensive. Traditionally the man is supposed to spend 3 months salary on one, but that isn’t really done as much these days.

Q – Why are there 2 rings (engagement and wedding) wouldnt that be extremely expensive?
A – Most engagement rings & wedding bands can be bought in a set to save money & then the rings will also match. There doesn’t always have to be an engagement ring, but it’s just grown to be a custom. When people mention being engaged everyone always wants to see the engagement ring. The wedding band speaks for itself.

Q – Does the guy get an engagement ring too, or is the just the girl?
A – Guys can have an engagement ring too. It’s not tradition but it is becoming more popular lately. When I got engaged I bought my fiance a nice ring. Was nothing fancy cause it would just get damaged at work.

Q – Does the girl have to buy the guys wedding ring?
Usually the bride does buy the grooms ring. I think traditionally the grooms parents buy the wedding bands but not all traditional customs are followed thru on anymore.

Q – Does the couple shop for the wedding rings together?
Most of the time, yes. A lot of couples like to have matching rings therefore they’d shop together. But it can always be kept a surprise too.

Q – Also, isn’t there an engagement/wedding ring that is like 2 pieces, and when the wedding comes you get the 2nd piece?
Yes, thats a bridal set. Engagement rings come in all shapes & sizes these days so the wedding band is made to fit perfectly with it. My engagement ring is princess cut & the matching wedding band has a square groove in it to fit perfectly. My sisters wedding band is curved to fit in with her wavy styled engagement ring.

Wedding Themes?

  • Posted on April 12, 2010 at 9:02 AM

What are some diiferent themes for a wedding?

Well, your theme can be anything . . . from "marriage" to your colors to pirates! It can be weird or normal or elegant or wow.

My theme is double interlocking hearts. They seem to be very popular right now so I am finding them everywhere. My BMs are wearing interlocking heart necklaces. There will be some interlocking heart decorations at my reception, etc. Not overdone. Just as a nice touch rather.

So, themes are very versatile. Like I said, you can have anything you want. You can also do TONS with your theme or have it be nice and subtle.

For theme ideas, flip through bridal magazines (which is fun anyway!), go to major bridal sites (like theknot.com), and just look around when you go shopping for things that interest you! Is there anything you really enjoy? Like beaches? Or rainbows? Or the color blue? Etc.

Just think about it and pick something that will fit you and your fiance! And don’t forget you don’t necessarily NEED a theme. I think it just helps you organize your thoughts and decorate more easily.

Congrats and have fun!!
